Welcome to Waikaia
A pleasant small farming settlement near the hills that separate Central Otago from Southland. Steeped in history it was once know as Switzers after John Switzers who owned a substantial run in the area, before the town adopted the name of the local river. In 1862 gold was discovered in substantial quantities and mined until 1937. There are many fascinating gold relics and heritage sites to explore and you may just spot an old digger still prospecting in these parts.
